Manuel Antonio National Park — The Centrepiece

Manuel Antonio National Park was established in 1972 and protects 1,685 acres of coastal rainforest alongside 55,000 acres of ocean. It holds one of the highest concentrations of wildlife per square kilometre of any protected area in Costa Rica — four monkey species, two sloth species, scarlet macaws, toucans and over 180 bird species coexist within a compact area that is walkable in a morning. The park has a daily visitor cap; book tickets online at sinac.go.cr before arrival, especially between December and April when the park sells out weeks in advance. Arrive at 7am when the park opens for the best wildlife sightings and the beach before crowds arrive.

The Beaches of Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio has five distinct beaches, each with its own character. Playa Manuel Antonio inside the national park is the most photographed — a protected cove with calm, clear water and monkey-populated forest directly behind the sand. Playa Espadilla Norte is the main public beach outside the park, a wide surf beach lined with restaurants and beach bars. Biesanz Beach is the quietest option — a secluded cove reached by a short trail, consistently recommended for couples wanting privacy. Playa Gemelas offers two small adjacent coves just outside the park entrance without the entrance fee. Makanda's Wild Beach provides guests with exclusive beach service — sun loungers, towels, beverages and WiFi — in a natural Pacific setting below the hotel.

Wildlife Beyond the National Park

Wildlife in Manuel Antonio is not confined to the national park. The hillside forest between the park and Quepos forms a wildlife corridor where monkeys, sloths and birds move freely through hotel gardens and roadside trees. Early mornings between 6 and 8am are the most productive time for wildlife around hotel grounds. Makanda by the Sea sits in this forest corridor — white-faced monkeys, sloths, toucans and scarlet macaws visit the property regularly. A guided naturalist tour, whether inside the park or on the hotel grounds, dramatically increases what you see compared to independent observation.

Activities and Day Trips from Manuel Antonio

The area within 45 minutes of Manuel Antonio covers an exceptional range of activities. Nauyaca Waterfalls (4km hike or horseback to a 61-metre cascade with swimming pools) is the most popular full-day trip. Sunset sailing from Quepos Marina produces dolphin encounters regularly along this stretch of coast. Whale watching operates September through October when humpback whales migrate through the Pacific waters just offshore. The Fincas Naturales butterfly garden hosts 30+ species including the Blue Morpho. Surf lessons at Playa Espadilla, white-water rafting on the Savegre River during Green Season, and guided birding in the Savegre valley round out the activity range.

Where to Stay in Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio has options across all price points, but the boutique hotels on the hillside above the coast offer the best combination of Pacific views, forest setting and personalised service. Makanda by the Sea is the only adults-only luxury boutique property in the area with private pool villas — 33 rooms across nine categories, every one facing west over the Pacific. The adults-only policy creates a consistently quiet atmosphere suited to couples and independent travellers. The location 150 metres from the ocean puts the national park 5 minutes away by car and the wild beach on foot via a hotel trail.

Getting to Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio is approximately 3 hours from San José by car or shuttle along the Costanera highway. Private transfers from Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) are the most comfortable option for a first arrival and can be arranged through Makanda reception. Shared shuttles operate multiple times daily from San José and from other Costa Rican destinations including La Fortuna, Monteverde and Tamarindo. Domestic flights operate from San José to the Quepos airport (XQP) — the 25-minute flight reduces travel time significantly and Makanda reception can arrange airport pickup. The nearest town, Quepos, is 7km north of Manuel Antonio and serves as the main service hub for the area.
