Manuel Antonio Packing List: What to Bring (Dry & Green Season)
Manuel Antonio is tropical year-round — warm, humid and unpredictable by mid-afternoon. What you pack depends heavily on the season and what you plan to do. This guide gives you a practical, no-nonsense packing list for both the Dry Season and Green Season, covering beaches, national park trails, evenings out and everything in between.

Dry Season Packing List (December through April)
The Dry Season brings consistent sunshine, lower humidity and reliable beach days. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing in natural fibres — linen and cotton handle the heat better than synthetics. Two to three swimsuits are practical since you will likely be in and out of the water daily. Reef-safe sunscreen is essential and non-negotiable near Manuel Antonio National Park — standard chemical sunscreen is discouraged near the protected marine areas. A wide-brim hat and UV-rated sunglasses protect you during the middle of the day when UV levels are extreme. Light sandals for beach and town, closed-toe shoes for park trails, and one or two smart casual outfits for dinner round out the Dry Season essentials. A reusable water bottle is useful — the heat in the Dry Season is dehydrating.
Green Season Packing List (May through November)
The Green Season brings afternoon rain showers almost daily — usually one to two hours in the afternoon that clear quickly. The mornings are typically dry and excellent for outdoor activities. Add a lightweight packable rain jacket or poncho to your bag — a full-length umbrella is awkward on trails and less practical. A waterproof phone case or dry bag is important: sudden rain can arrive without warning on park trails. Quick-dry clothing is more useful than cotton in the Green Season as humidity stays high and items take longer to dry. Closed-toe waterproof shoes or hiking sandals are better for muddy trails than open sandals. The Green Season brings lush, vivid jungle scenery and significantly fewer crowds — pack for the rain and enjoy the experience.
What to Pack for Manuel Antonio National Park
The national park requires slightly different preparation than a beach day. Wear neutral-coloured lightweight clothing — bright colours can startle wildlife. Closed-toe shoes or hiking sandals are required; flip flops are not suitable for park trails. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person — there are no water stations inside the park. Pack reef-safe sunscreen applied before entering, insect repellent, and a small snack if you plan to spend more than two hours inside. A camera with zoom capability and binoculars dramatically improve wildlife sightings. Leave large bags at the hotel — a small daypack is enough and easier to manage on trails. Do not bring food in visible packaging: monkeys are smart and fast.
Electronics and Valuables
Pack light with electronics. A smartphone with a good camera handles most travel photography needs in Manuel Antonio — carrying a separate camera adds weight without always adding quality for beach and wildlife shots. A power bank is genuinely useful: long park mornings and boat tours drain batteries faster than expected. A universal travel adapter is needed if you are coming from North America, Europe or the UK. Do not bring expensive jewellery or watches — there is nowhere to safely store them at the beach and they attract attention. A simple waterproof pouch for your phone and cards covers most situations. At Makanda by the Sea, the room safe is available for any valuables you do bring.
What You Can Leave at Home (Makanda Provides It)
Staying at Makanda by the Sea means you can skip several items that would otherwise fill your bag. Beach towels are provided for all guests — no need to pack your own. The hotel provides high-quality toiletries, hair dryers and basic amenities in every room. Pool towels are available at the infinity pool. Beach service at the wild beach includes towels and loungers. The hotel laundry service means you can pack fewer clothes for longer stays — three to four days of clothing is enough for a week if you use the laundry. Makanda reception stocks insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen for guests who arrive without — useful if you want to pack carry-on only.
Packing Tips for Travelling to Manuel Antonio
One carry-on plus one checked bag is enough for most stays in Manuel Antonio, even for two weeks. The climate does not require heavy clothing at any time of year. Soft-sided bags are easier than hard-shell cases on shuttles and smaller transport. If you are flying into San Jose (SJO) and taking a shuttle or private transfer to Manuel Antonio (approximately three hours), have your essentials accessible in your carry-on — luggage loading varies by transport type. Driving or arriving by shuttle means you can pack a little more freely than if you are doing multi-stop travel around Costa Rica. Makanda reception can arrange luggage storage if you arrive before check-in time.
